This property is located in Sherman Township, in the Keweenaw County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan – a Township along the Keweenaw Bay’s western shore - Near Lake Superior’s Hermit Bay. The property is located a few miles north of the once booming Historic Mining Village of Gay. This area was organized in 1898 when the Mohawk Mining Company built a stamping mill on the nearby shore of Lake Superior. It was followed by the building of a second stamping mill built by the Wolverine Mining Company. A Smelter here heated ore to extract copper, which was then stamped into copper ingots. A post office opened in 1904, named for Joseph E. Gay, long associated with mining in the area.
